Photos by Franck Collumeau – Dogstar is an American alternative rock band originally formed in Los Angeles in the early 1990s by bassist Keanu Reeves, drummer Robert Mailhouse, and guitarist-vocalist Bret Domrose. Emerging during the height of the alternative rock boom, the trio developed a loyal following through relentless touring and a straightforward, melodic rock sound that blended grunge, post-punk, and classic rock influences. While Reeves’ fame brought attention to the group, Dogstar earned respect through their commitment to musicianship and energetic live performances.

Throughout the 1990s, Dogstar released albums including Our Little Visionary and Happy Ending, showcasing a style rooted in heartfelt songwriting and guitar-driven arrangements. The band toured extensively across North America and internationally, sharing stages with a variety of notable acts and building a reputation as a hardworking live band. Their music emphasized authenticity over trends, helping them carve out a distinct identity within the crowded alternative rock landscape.

After disbanding in 2002, Dogstar remained a fondly remembered cult favorite among fans of 1990s alternative music. For more than two decades, the band’s catalog continued to attract new listeners, while speculation about a reunion persisted. In 2022, the trio officially reunited, delighting longtime fans and introducing their music to a new generation of rock audiences.

The reunion culminated in the release of Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees in 2023, the band’s first studio album in over twenty years. The record demonstrated that Dogstar’s chemistry remained intact, balancing reflective songwriting with polished rock arrangements and mature perspectives. With renewed creative energy and a growing audience, Dogstar continues to prove that their enduring friendship and passion for music remain at the heart of everything they do.
