Photos by Sharon Steele – Formed in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1999, Default quickly emerged as one of the defining forces in North American post-grunge and alternative rock during the early 2000s. Comprising lead vocalist Dallas Smith, lead guitarist Jeremy Hora, bassist Dave Benedict, and drummer Danny Craig, the four-piece ensemble built a sound defined by crunching guitar riffs, soaring melodic hooks, and raw emotional intensity. After catching the attention of Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger—who championed the band early on—Default signed a record deal and immediately set to work taking their hard-hitting anthems to a global audience.

The group exploded onto the international music scene with their 2001 debut album, The Fallout, which achieved platinum status in both Canada and the United States. Anchored by the smash single “Wasting My Time”—a track that dominated rock and pop radio charts worldwide—Default solidified their position as a mainstay on rock radio and arena tours. Over the decade that followed, the band delivered a steady string of hard-rock hits across subsequent albums, including Elocation (2003), One Thing Remains (2005), and Comes and Goes (2009), generating fan-favorite singles like “Deny,” “Count on Me,” and “(Taking My) Life Away”.

While the band went on hiatus in 2013 as front-man Dallas Smith launched a record-breaking solo country music career, Default’s legacy as a cornerstone of Canadian rock remains undisputed. Reconnecting for select reunion tours and festival appearances, the original four members continue to demonstrate the undeniable stage chemistry and powerhouse musicianship that first catapulted them to the top of the charts. Driven by distortion-heavy grooves and anthemic choruses, Default’s discography stands as a timeless blueprint of 2000s post-grunge rock.
