From its jangly opening before launching into an infectious beat, GOLDSPACE’s new release, “Bad Love,” may be its most irresistible yet. On the surface, the playful R&B/pop track is a carefree love song about flying high after that first blissful night. Dig a little deeper, however, to find that it’s an exploration of the vulnerabilities that always come with falling head over heels in love.
A sophisticated pop confection with intricate layers of vocal harmonies and instrumentation, “Bad Love” traces a beautiful, delicate melody over a bossa-nova-meets-future r&b backing that mixes acoustic guitar, flamenco claps and deep bass riffs. By the time the gorgeous supper-club piano outro hits, listeners will swear it’s a cover of a classic.
“Bad love was written about the early stage of a relationship, or the honeymoon phase,” said GOLDSPACE. “It’s kind of a U-Haul anthem about wanting to take the leap and fall in love even if it’s quick. And that’s how we made the song too — all in one night.”
The Los Angeles-based duo, known for creating rich sonic landscapes, received wide praise for 2018’s “Heavy Hitter” featuring lyricist Saint Laurant before releasing their EP Stupid Mind. Even though vocalist Maia Quin and producer Andre Samuel have been stuck in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, their creativity is still flowing hard. “Bad Love,” one in a series of singles to be released this year, follows up GOLDSPACE’s previous track, “Butter.”
