Photos by Sharon Steele – Born and raised in Salluit, a remote village in Nunavik, Quebec, accessible only by plane, the visionary Inuk singer-songwriter, activist, and filmmaker Elisapie has spent her career bridging the vast landscapes of her youth with the vibrant energy of the modern indie music scene. Her creative journey is deeply anchored in an unconditional attachment to her territory and her mother tongue, Inuktitut. Balancing tradition and modernity, Elisapie seamlessly weaves raw emotional narrative with a signature sound that blends rock, folk, and ambient pop, captivating audiences worldwide and firmly establishing herself as an emblematic figure in contemporary Canadian music.
Elisapie’s artistic trajectory has been marked by consistent critical acclaim, beginning with her 2005 Juno Award win alongside the duo Taima and continuing through her breakout 2018 solo record, The Ballad of the Runaway Girl, which earned a short-list nomination for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize. Her boundary-pushing 2023 album, Inuktitut, catapulted her to new heights. A deeply personal, autobiographical collection of classic rock and pop covers from icons like Metallica, Blondie, and Cyndi Lauper reimagined entirely in Inuktitut, the record struck a profound chord with global listeners, earning her back-to-back Juno Awards in 2024 and 2025 (including Adult Alternative Album of the Year) and a sweep of five Félix Awards at the ADISQ Gala.
Beyond her mesmerizing stage presence and starkly beautiful vocals, Elisapie is a multihyphenate force whose cultural contributions reach far beyond the recording studio. An accomplished broadcaster and documentary filmmaker, she has used her platform to amplify Indigenous resilience, address the legacy of colonialism, and celebrate community—even creating and producing Le Grand Solstice, a national television broadcast honoring National Indigenous Peoples Day. Recognized with a commemorative Canada Post stamp for her immense cultural impact, Elisapie continues to tour internationally, delivering unforgettable live performances that merge the spirit of community with bold, emotional artistic risk.
