Photos by Caitie Corkal – Puscifer is the boundary-pushing project led by Maynard James Keenan, best known for his work with Tool and A Perfect Circle. Formed in the mid-2000s, Puscifer operates as a multimedia collective as much as a band, blending experimental rock, electronic textures, and performance art into a uniquely immersive experience. The project allows Keenan a more playful, conceptual outlet, often weaving humor, satire, and social commentary into its music and visuals.
Puscifer’s debut album V Is for Vagina (2007) introduced audiences to their eclectic and genre-defying sound, combining pulsing beats with atmospheric arrangements and provocative lyricism. Follow-up releases like Conditions of My Parole(2011) and Money Shot (2015) further expanded their sonic palette, balancing introspective moments with offbeat storytelling. The band frequently collaborates with vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Carina Round, whose dynamic presence has become central to the group’s evolving identity.
Beyond the studio, Puscifer is known for its highly theatrical live performances, often incorporating elaborate narratives, costumes, and comedic sketches. Rather than traditional concerts, their shows feel like hybrid productions—part rock gig, part performance art piece—challenging conventional expectations of what a live music experience can be. This creative approach has helped cultivate a dedicated fanbase drawn to the project’s unpredictability and originality.
With albums like Existential Reckoning (2020), Puscifer continues to push artistic boundaries, exploring themes of technology, identity, and human connection in an increasingly complex world. Unconstrained by genre or format, the project remains a vital outlet for experimentation and storytelling, reinforcing its place as one of the most inventive and unconventional acts in modern alternative music.
