Photos by Shannon Guest – The Windy City Smokeout has established itself as a premier summer tradition in Chicago, seamlessly blending the best of country music, craft beer, and world-class barbecue. Launched in 2013 by the prominent restaurant group Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises and co-founded by award-winning promoter Ed Warm, the festival was created to bring an authentic, down-home southern tailgate atmosphere right into the heart of the Midwest. Over its impressive history, the event has grown from a passionate local gathering into a massive, nationally recognized spectacle, earning the prestigious “Festival of the Year” award from the Academy of Country Music (ACM) in both 2022 and 2024.

The venue itself plays a massive role in the festival’s unique, high-energy identity. Located in the vast parking lots right outside Chicago’s iconic United Center, the event transforms a sprawling urban concrete landscape into what organizers proudly call the “world’s largest parking lot party.” This setting offers magnificent views of the city skyline as a backdrop while accommodating massive main stages, sprawling dining areas, and interactive vendor booths. The layout captures a distinct urban tailgating vibe, giving attendees plenty of room to dance to live music, wander between smoky pitmaster stations, and sample an extensive selection of craft beers from top-tier breweries.

Barbecue is treated as a true art form at the festival, which annually hosts a curated roster of more than 20 of the country’s most celebrated pitmaster teams. Renowned culinary icons and regional smokehouse champions travel from legendary BBQ hubs across Texas, Nashville, Kentucky, and Missouri to showcase their regional specialties. Festival-goers can indulge in everything from slow-smoked brisket and tender ribs to inventive pork dishes, while local Chicago favorites like Smoque BBQ, Soul & Smoke, and Green Street Smoked Meats hold down the home turf. Signature culinary events, such as the massive Friday afternoon Happy Hour and a bottomless Sunday BBQ Brunch, further elevate the weekend into a world-class food lover’s paradise.

The 2026 iteration marks a historic milestone for the Windy City Smokeout as it celebrates its 13th year by expanding to a five-day format for the very first time, running from July 8–12. The extended weekend kicked off with a brand-new, intimate Wednesday night concert headlined by Treaty Oak Revival, giving fans an early taste of the festivities while pitmasters put the finishing touches on the weekend’s main feasts. The star-studded 2026 lineup featured a powerhouse rotation of country music’s absolute biggest names across the remaining nights, including unforgettable headlining performances from Hootie & The Blowfish, Lainey Wilson, Jordan Davis, and a spectacular Sunday finale by Blake Shelton.
