Canadian Roots artist Charissa, released the music video for her compelling new single “People Like You” via Coalition Music. “People Like You” is a quiet acoustic track that reminds listeners that even when times are rough, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and likely someone waiting there to help you out of the dark. The music video, directed by Kat Kwan at Summerset Studio in Toronto, ON, is visually minimal and honest, starting off solemnly, but ending with feelings of hope and inspiration.

How have you been keeping creative during the Pandemic?
The truth is that I wasn’t very creative for the first little while. It took me some time to start feeling like my normal melodic self. I was really missing the weekly songwriting sessions and when I started to feel more hopeful again, I decided to try some Zoom writing. I ended up writing many songs over Zoom and made new friendships. The highlight of 2021 was recording my debut EP produced by Colin Cripps! It really lifted my spirits going into the studio lots and creating new music that I am so proud of. I also created a music space other than my bedroom so I could feel like I wasn’t “at home” all day, everyday. It’s been keeping me more inspired having my own space to rehearse and write more music.

Tell us a bit about your musical background.
I started taking vocal lessons with an opera coach when I was eight years old. That was where I learned the basics of singing and how to project my voice. I’m really grateful for those lessons, because I feel like it helped me find my true voice. I was also very shy growing up and it took me a while to actually get my voice to be heard, (literally). In elementary school I played the alto saxophone and learned how to read music. When I was twelve years old I picked up my grandpa’s Spanish guitar and taught myself chords with his guitar books. I went on to take formal lessons for a few years after that.

How would you describe your music in three words?
Soulful, warm, and honest.

When you first started did you have a sense of which type of music you wanted to make, or did it take a while to land on a sound?
I have always been inspired by big soulful voices and I wanted to express myself like that. “I Got My Girls” was the first single I released independently and was the first step in that direction. I really enjoyed the recording process for that song and felt like I really found my voice there. It took some years of living, experiences and writing to feel like I found my sound but I also believe it constantly evolves.

What was the inspiration behind your new single ‘People Like You’?
I wrote “People Like You” in honour of my friend. He was a bright, kind, and genuine person. I wanted it to be a reminder to people that we are all special in this world. Oftentimes I think we can forget to let people know of the good that they do while they are here with us.

Who helped out making this single?
The song was written by myself, Chrystal Leigh and Emma-Lee. It was produced by Colin Cripps.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?
I’d say it’s a blend of Americana and country-soul, focusing on the song writing  and being lyrically driven. I really love writing stories and honestly just writing from the heart from my own personal experiences.

What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
I think music is so powerful in so many different ways. It can inspire, it can heal, it can be whatever you need. Music is medicine

Describe your favourite and least favourite part about being a musician.
I think my favourite part is being able to do what I’m most passionate about as a career as it never feels like work. A day in the studio is truly one of the best days, they always fly by. I also love being able to bring people together. My least favourite part would be in the most recent years adapting to the online world.

Do you have more new music scheduled to come out this year?
Yes! I’m so excited to say my debut EP will be released in the Spring. It’s something I’ve been working towards for a long time. I feel like it’s a piece of my heart being released into the universe. I’m so proud of these songs.

When you kick back, who are some of the artists you listen to?
When I’m relaxing I’ll listen to more acoustic music and a few of my favourites  are Patty Griffin, Chris Stapleton, The Lumineers, Maren Morris and Hozier.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?
I enjoy walks in nature, gardening and biking.

Any fun facts or hidden talents you would like to share?
When I was really young my family would ask me to sing for their friends and family but I was so shy I would go into a different room to sing for them, not wanting to face them!
