Photos by Sharon Steele – Formed in the late 1970s London post-punk scene, The Psychedelic Furs emerged as one of the most distinctive and influential bands of the new wave era. Fronted by the unmistakable voice of Richard Butler and driven by the sonic vision of his brother Tim Butler, the band blended raw punk energy with lush, art-rock textures and poetic lyricism. Their early albums, including Talk Talk Talk and Forever Now, helped define the atmospheric sound that would influence countless alternative and indie acts.
The Furs gained mainstream recognition in the mid-1980s, most notably with their iconic track “Pretty in Pink,” which inspired the John Hughes film of the same name. Their ability to evolve—embracing pop polish without losing their edge—kept them relevant throughout a shifting musical landscape. Albums like Mirror Moves and Midnight to Midnightshowcased their knack for moody, hook-filled songwriting that resonated across generations.
After a long hiatus, The Psychedelic Furs returned in the 2000s and solidified their legacy with live tours and the 2020 release of Made of Rain, their first studio album in nearly 30 years. Their sound remains as vital and emotionally charged as ever, bridging the past and present with a style that is uniquely their own. Decades on, The Furs continue to inspire new audiences while staying true to the spirit that made them cult favorites and post-punk pioneers.
